Peanut Butter Maker Sunland Recalls 240 Products

The company which made the peanut butter sold at California Trader Joe’s stores has now recalled more than 300 products. The testing done on various production and manufacturing surfaces at the Sunland Inc. nut butter factory in Portales, New Mexico, showed the presence of Salmonella. Today in America TVhears that they produce products under labels Kirkland (Costco), Fresh & Easy, Harry & David, Whole Foods, Natural Value, Newman’s Own Organics, Oregon Ice Cream Co., Sun Harvest, Yogurtland and more. Consumers should never eat recalled food no matter what their age or health status. Salmonella can affect people differently. Large and small retailers are looking for seasonal help.

The holiday season is approaching and US retailers are expected to beef up staffing. This is good news for those who are not working and need to bring a paycheck in to the house. Some of the country’s largest stores will need holiday help.  Today in America TV reminds viewers where the jobs are:

Target – hiring 90,000 nationally
Macy’s – 80,000
Walmart- 50,000 and increasing hours for staff
Kohl’s 52,700
Toys R Us -  45,000

Also, most, if not all of the above have online applications to complete and submit. The days of walking in to a store and filling out an application are over. Many of the applications are long and include questionnaires to gauge behavior. Be sure to plan enough time to complete the entire application process. Start applying now. Keep in mind that small businesses also need help this season and may offer a better opportunity for part-time work. Perhaps a better plan would be to “swim against the flow” and head for the locally-owned and operated retailers. Your hours could be better and you will not have to deal with the general public in such great numbers.

The Environmental Impact and Today in America Terry Bradshaw

Green house gasses and how it affects us

There have been many naysayers in the discussion of global warming. Scholars and environmentalists are now acknowledging the existence of it and that human impact plays a major role. The Today in America Terry Bradshaw program explores environmental impact and how it affects the earth, atmosphere and our lives.

Major Causes

Greenhouse gases that trap heat in the atmosphere are called greenhouse gases. These come from air pollution from cars, trucks, and factories. Eighty-four percent of these gasses are derived from carbon dioxide, otherwise known as fossil fuels (coal, natural gas and oil), solid waste, trees and other wood products. If automobiles were made user a cleaner form of energy, there would be less gasses in the atmosphere, and therefore less global warming. This warming is a major cause of the relentless heat wave spread across the country and causing the wide-spread drought and the death of fish and other animals. The drought causes the prices of food to go up because there is not enough in supply to feed the demand.

Recent studies are testing whether traditional drugs used to lower cholesterol levels may be used to lower the risk of getting cancer. Scientists are studying the records of over 200,000 people prescribed statin drugs from 1998 to 2006. The results show these patients had a 31% lower incidence of contracting lymphomas compared to people who were taking cholesterol reducing medication. Additional studies need to take place before statin drugs can be approved to treat cancer, but it is a promising step in the right direction.

New Research Links Common Chemical to Alzheimer’s Disease

New Research Links Common Chemical to Alzheimer's Disease

New research suggests a link between a chemical used in buttered popcorn and Alzheimer's disease.

Next time you go to the movies, think twice about getting popcorn. A new study suggests a link between a chemical that gives buttered popcorn that great taste and Alzheimer’s disease. The research, conducted by scientists at the University of Minnesota, found that diacetyl, a chemical used to create the butter smell and flavoring in microwaveable popcorn, acts similarly to chemicals that cause beta-amyloid proteins to clump in the brain, a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease. Many other foods and beverages, including baked goods, margarine, snack foods, candy, Chardonnay and beer also contain the chemical. Is there anything that is safe to eat or drink anymore? Many older people and couples are opting to move to active adult communities, for residents 55 years of age and older. These communities offer a variety of housing options including apartment buildings, condos and small homes. The adult oriented neighborhood offers many amenities including swimming pools, arts and crafts, golf and social events such as dinners and dances.

Greener Cities Usually Are Safer Cities

The inner cities are brightening up with more planted trees and shrubs, flowers and natural areas for residents to enjoy. Today in America Terry Bradshaw explores the theory behind greener cities are safer cities.  Safety cannot be guaranteed for anyone, but if you feel safe, you will be a bit happier where you live.

today-in-america-with-terry-bradshaw

Greening vacant lots makes residents feel safer and better

Some possibilities to think about: a local park which has a clean and safe walk/run trail as well as exercise stations, water fountains and shaded areas with benches to rest is a pleasant place for locals to enjoy the outdoors. More cities are turning run-down and degraded parts of town into a more peaceful, greener space for all to enjoy. It is a proven fact that when cities and towns make the time and effort to “green” a vacant lot or other abandoned space, the residents feel safer. When the residents feel safer, they probably will not move. If the residents do not move, more money stays in the city or town.
